Katarenga

Two players maneuver 16 identical pawns on a variable 8x8 board assembled from four double-sided quarter-boards, creating a different board layout each game. A pawn’s movement and capture abilities depend on the colour of the square it departs: each colour corresponds to one of four chess-derived moves (rook, bishop, knight, king). Players alternate moving or capturing with these shifting abilities and try to advance pawns while reacting to the changing piece powers. Victory in the basic game comes by getting two pawns across the opponent’s baseline without them being captured; the same components also support alternate scenarios using the same movement rules.
