Players create characters by rolling attributes and choosing a class, background, and alignment, then explore, fight monsters, cast spells, and gather treasure. The rules include standard and extended systems, with optional classes, advantages and disadvantages, hirelings, morale, strongholds, magic research, and other campaign tools. Combat can track physical wounds separately from hit points, while the book also provides spells, monsters, treasure, and random tables for running adventures.
