Via Appia

Players compete to build the ancient road linking Rome to Brundisium by selecting and laying stone tiles drawn from a shared quarry. A physical “falling quarters” mechanic determines which tiles become available, so timing and positioning in the quarry influence options. Players spend currency to move along the road, place tiles to extend sections, and collect points for valuable segments and for reaching cities early. The game emphasizes spatial planning, resource management, and timing as players try to assemble the most valuable route.

This game works like one of those machines in an arcade where you put a coin in and hope it pushes more coins out. In this case, coins are replaced with some nice wooden disks. You spend the disks that fall to buy stone tokens in the same size or dollars, and then build the road part of the board and walk down the road. The dexterity aspect of this game is really entertaining. I thought that would be the part I didn't like about the game, but in fact I thought it was pretty fantastic. Placing the road bits down was fine too, as there is a sloppily implemented area control aspect to that, which I also enjoyed (although I would have liked it more if we put tokens down to mark how we were doing rather than collect tokens and make it hidden information.) The tedious part was having to pay money to walk down the road. There is a poorly implemented blocking aspect in terms of the size of the stone you sit on, and it makes the game outlive it's welcome in terms of playtime.
