Blue Lagoon

2018 · Abstract Strategy

Blue Lagoon

Players explore an unsettled archipelago and expand a group of settlers to collect island resources over two distinct phases. On each turn a player places one token—a settler in the exploration phase or a village in the settlement phase—building chains that must touch the lagoon or an existing token in phase one, then expand only from previously placed villages in phase two. Resource icons under placed tokens form sets that score at the ends of both phases, and area control influences access to valuable spots. The player with the highest total score wins.

This game has a very Through the Desert feeling. On your turn you can place a marker so that it is either in water anywhere on the board, or next to spaces where you had tokens played from a previous turn. If you cover a resource token you save it for set collection. The round ends when all the tokens are claimed or when all the tokens are placed. Then you do a scoring with majority points for each island, points for connecting a chain of islands with your own tokens, and set collection points for the resources. Then you do a reset of the board removing everything except your hut markers. Huts are special land-only markers in this way and they only stay if they aren't sitting right on a resource space, because those spaces also get reset. For round 2 you do it all over again, but this time the place a boat anywhere rule is gone. This game is quick, turns are smooth and it's a very interesting tactical puzzle as you carve out areas for yourself and track all your different scoring goals. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :star: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :star: Multiple plays stay interesting :star: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::nostar::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment
