Fields of Green

2016 · Card Game

Fields of Green

Players run a mid-20th-century farm and expand their operations by adding fields, livestock, and facilities to build an economic engine. The game plays over four rounds representing years; each round players draft cards and place them onto their individual farm tableau. After drafting, a harvest phase requires watering fields, feeding animals, and paying maintenance to generate resources for the next year. Players use resources to further develop their farms and convert income into victory points; the player with the most points after the fourth year wins.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When do I get Food, Water, and coins each round — and can I lose them?

During the Upkeep you gain 1 Food, 2 Water and 3 coins (skip the coin/food/water gain on round 1); Water must be placed on Water Towers (each stores up to 3) and Food on Silos (each stores up to 4), and any excess is lost if your towers/silos are full (page 3).

Can I build a Location if I can’t pay its Water/Food requirements right now?

You cannot build a location if you can’t pay its build cost (coins or any Water/Food listed as a build requirement) — you must choose another action instead (page 5). However, you may build locations that have Harvest costs you can’t currently satisfy, but if you fail to pay those costs during the Harvest phase the card is turned face‑down as an Open Area (page 7).

Does Water have to come from a nearby Water Tower, and how far does it reach?

Yes — any Water requirement must be paid from a Water Tower within range 2 (distance counted orthogonally through built locations); each Water Tower holds up to 3 Water and can spend Water only within that 2‑space range (pages 4–5).

What happens if I can’t (or won’t) pay a Harvest cost for a card?

If you are unable or unwilling to pay a card’s Harvest cost during the Harvest phase, you must turn that location face‑down immediately and it becomes an Open Area (page 7), as shown in the example where unfed Turkeys are flipped (page 9).

If a Harvest gives me an Equipment, can I use it that same Harvest?

Yes — if a Harvest ability grants you an Equipment, you may use that Equipment in the same Harvest phase if applicable (page 7); placement and other equipment rules are detailed on page 11.

Do Food/Water carry over between rounds and can I move Food between Silos?

Stored Food and Water remain between rounds but are limited by storage (Silos max 4 Food, Water Towers max 3 Water) and excess is lost (page 3); you may freely move Food between Silos at any time as long as limits aren’t exceeded (page 6) and must avoid producing more Food than you can store during Harvest (page 7).
