Byzanz

2008 · Card Game

Byzanz

Players act as merchants in Byzantine markets, bidding to acquire goods and build scoring sets. Each round reveals an offer of multiple goods; players use cards from their hand as bids, placing them face up into a public market and paying one card from the won offer as a tax. Goods and merchant cards serve both as currency for bids and as pieces for sets. Players may sell sets of exactly three identical goods (merchant cards act as wilds) to score; merchant-only sets score separately. Play proceeds through a decreasing series of market offers, and when offers are exhausted the market’s contents can be claimed by the appropriate player before the next cycle. The game ends when all goods are auctioned and the highest total of collected goods points wins.
