Champions of Midgard

Players lead rival Viking clans who arrive to defend a besieged harbor town from trolls, draugr and other mythic beasts. On a turn, players place workers to collect resources, recruit warriors and take actions such as carving runes, building ships and feeding followers. Recruited warriors are represented by custom dice that are rolled when sent on journeys or into combat against monsters in neighboring lands and across the sea. Defeating creatures and completing ventures earns glory and divine favor; the player with the most glory at the end is declared the town’s champion.

A worker placement game, where instead of all cubes, some of the cubes are dice. You roll the dice to determine if your action worked, and if you retain any of the dice for future turns. It's an ok idea, but the game itself is pretty dull. There's some luck mitigation, which is good, but really the problem is there isn't much to strive for in the game other than hoping for the best in terms of what you roll and what cards flip. The game also has a system where when the troll card isn't encountered, it assigns these negative point blame tokens to everyone. In future turns, when the troll IS encountered and defeated, the player who did it gets to hand their previously gotten negative point token to someone else. This turns into a sort of punish the loser mechanism because the tokens hurt more the more you have. Why would I hand it to the point leader when it only takes away a few points, when I can hand it to someone who might catch up in points later who has a bunch of the tokens already, where it does a lot more damage? Very meh on this game. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :nostar: Clever or interesting mechanisms :nostar: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :nostar: Multiple plays stay interesting :star: Low or mitigatable luck elements :nostar::nostar::nostar::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment

Cool Viking's EuroThrash. Better than Raiders Of The North Sea. Expansions are very enjoyable.
