Here I Stand

A grand strategic simulation of 16th-century Europe during the Protestant Reformation. Players take the roles of one of six great powers vying for influence—military, political, religious, and colonial—on a point-to-point map covering Europe and the Mediterranean. Play proceeds through a card-driven system that resolves events, military actions, and diplomatic maneuvers. A pre-turn Diplomacy Phase encourages secret bargaining and alliance-making off the table, while event and response cards allow any power to interrupt or counter rivals. Multiple scenarios support shorter tournament plays or a full campaign, and rules scale for three to six players.

It is on some level interesting to get a abstracted sense of why historic events went a certain way. Loads of downtime between turns, as each faction participates in completely different mechanisims, which many times only involve one or two of the other players. This leads to long downtime and entire areas of the game certain factions just don't have any influence over. Many factions have 'best moves' that are somewhat telegraphed. Seems like an area control game, but the action cards and reinforcement rules are harsh making it hard to keep any conquered territory, which I suppose keeps it historic and accurate. :star: Art and components :star: Innovative mechanics :star: Handles 5 or more players :nostar: Good with different player counts :nostar: Low time between turns :nostar: Comfortable complexity :star: Re-playability :nostar::nostar::nostar: Enjoyment
