Long Shot: The Dice Game

Players participate in a 1930s horse-racing competition for up to eight total. They buy shares in horses, place bets, and use influence to affect which horses move during a race. Dice determine which horses move and which actions are available each turn, creating shifting opportunities that require adaptation. Players also employ horse-specific abilities and make strategic investments to generate income. When three horses finish, players total earnings from bets, ownership, and other payouts; the highest earner wins.

Entretenido juego de carreras y apuestas. Para solitario queda un poco justo, se desfruta mucho más en grupos. Carreras locas y con giros inesperados, en la recta final muchos puteos. Sencillo de explicar y de jugar.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

If I roll the dice, which horses move and how far?

For each die, move the horse that matches that die a number of spaces equal to the die; if the rolled horse cannot move, it does not move. (page 5)

What happens when a horse moves into a space already occupied by other horses—are they pushed or do they stack?

When a horse moves into an occupied space it causes secondary movement and the stacks change position as shown in the examples, so the arriving horse and the horses in that space update their stack/order accordingly. (page 5)

When can I use a horse's ability—only when I buy it or whenever I own it?

A horse ability only applies while you own that horse and is optional; resolve it when its trigger condition occurs or when the owner takes the specified action (each ability shows its trigger symbol). (page 7)

How do Wild Numbers work—can I use them to take any action or change a die?

At the start of your turn you may mark one Wild Number and treat that number as if it were the rolled number for your action, and you may also use a Wild Number to change a rolled number into one you can use. (page 6)

If I can't take an action with the rolled number, what are my options?

You can use a Wild Number to change the rolled number, or spend your entire turn to erase the mark on one of your Wild Numbers so it becomes available later. (page 6)

Does the game end immediately when a horse crosses the finish line?

When a rival horse crosses the finish line, finish the current round, then end the game and proceed to scoring. (page 7)
