Play as Bass Reeves in 1854 as the story follows his life from enslaved laborer toward a bid for freedom. Players reveal story and map cards to build the adventure tableau and encounter scenes representing locations, people, and events from the period. Around the central map, players place action cards and consult to choose actions such as drawing, flipping, discarding, or resolving effects. Urgent cards interrupt and must be read and resolved immediately, while object cards sit in front of players to provide ongoing benefits. A tutorial guides the first playthrough; repeated runs explore alternate choices and different endings based on decisions made during the story.
