The set uses a compact, boardless design for quicker, more portable play and is compatible with cards from the larger system to expand player count and options.

This takes away too much of what makes Mage Wars great. No tactical positioning and no planning phase really detracts from it. It is better than a lot of other CCG's, but I just can't help but feel disappointed when I play. The cards are good for Arena though.

I like Mage Wars Arena a lot, but the games are a little too long for me. I think Academy is a great attempt at shifting the game into a quicker-playing one, without sacrificing too much depth.
