Iberia

Set on the Iberian Peninsula in 1848, players assume specialist roles such as nurse, railwayman, rural doctor and sailor to halt outbreaks of malaria, typhus, yellow fever and cholera. Players move between cities by carriage, boat or train, treat disease cubes, distribute purified water and build rail links to slow transmission while cooperating to discover cures. Two optional variants change gameplay: one increases patient influx toward hospitals and boosts hospital abilities; the other assigns unique powers to each historical disease for more thematic challenge.

I would play this over standard Pandemic in almost every scenario (except maybe with absolute strangers to boardgaming). Love the variety of setups, variants and the extra challenge it brings.

S'il ne fallait qu'un Pandemic, on prendrait celui-ci. Thème, possibilités, variantes, mécanismes... un jeu coopératif majeur enfin disponible à nouveau !

Between this and Pandemic: Rising Tide, I'm going to have to stop saying I don't like Pandemic. There are a few things that make this game shine for me. I don't know why, but first off, the theme works so much better for me here than the theme of base pandemic. Something about the virus movie appeal of the original game is a huge turn off for me. This period piece early doctor thing that's happening in this game works for me. The game has a few fun looking changes from the original pandemic, but I figured I'd take it slow and just try the game at the most basic level first. Good thing too considering the mess I made of things. The core changes here are that rather than being able to fly around the board, you can only teleport between spaces along the edge of the map with boat anchors. If you want to teleport into any spaces in the interior of the map, you first have to spend actions laying down railroad pieces along the routes. To compensate you for the wasted actions, you can also waste cards from your hand to drop purified water tokens into regions of the board, which then get removed to prevent a cube from being placed in any of the cities bordering that region. Of course, doing this too much means you won't have the cards needed to research the diseases, which is how you win. The last major change is that when a disease gets researched, it continues to punish you, and is never eradicated. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :star: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :nostar: Multiple plays stay interesting :star: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::star::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment
