Endeavor: Age of Sail

Players represent expanding empires that send ships from Europe and the Mediterranean to found trade routes and occupy cities around the globe. Gameplay centers on developing industry, culture, finance and Influence to build an engine that supports wider exploration and control of distant regions. Players place buildings, establish shipping lanes, and use region-specific exploits to modify actions and scoring. The edition includes a double-sided board for different player counts, variable starting setups with new buildings, and updated art and components to support the strategic and thematic systems.

This is a game about building a little engine by increasing the tracks on your personal board, and using your actions to grab spaces on a central board. At the start of each round, each player gets to add a building tile to their tableau. The various buildings provide track bumps and or action spaces to be used during the main phase. What's nice about this is the buildings only have a track threshold requirement to take one rather than a resource cost. Then you get an income of action markers and get workers back from the buildings you activated in a previous round equal to your levels on those two tracks. Once this is done you enter the meat of the game during the actions phase. During setup tokens are placed in a ton of circle spaces across everything everywhere. Each token has printed on it an icon that provides a single track bump in the matching track, or it has a bonus action it can be discarded later in the game to execute. Spaces on the board tend to be worth 1 vp per space at the end of the game, but then there is an additional point and token for owning both spaces along one of the black lines that bracket a circle space between them. To this end players work to build out little networks. As the game progresses, new areas become available, and more cards can be taken based on how many player markers you have in the various regions. At the end of the game you score based on your board positions, plus points from your tableau for printed points on cards and buildings, then additional points from reaching set thresholds on your tracks. Setting up the tokens everywhere at the start of the game is a bit daunting, but once gameplay gets going, turns are quick and the game is very player interactive. The game has a real elegance to it's flow. Players have time and opportunity to respond to each other's actions giving the game that push/pull feeling I love. In the beginning of the game there's a push for taking boat actions and flag actions to claim empty spaces, but as those open spaces deplete, taking cannon and card actions to grab cards and knock other players out of key spaces becomes important, giving the game a solid play arc. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :star: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :star: Multiple plays stay interesting :star: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::star::star::nostar: Raw enjoyment

أسئلة القواعد

إجابات من كتيّب القواعد يقدمها مساعد القواعد في Ludoya.

How do Exploits become active during the game?

When a region opens and its Governor card is awarded, any Keys on that Governor are placed on the matching crests of Exploits; when an Exploit has Keys on both of its crests it is activated and each player with presence in both regions places a Shield on that Exploit to show they may interact with and score from it (page 3).

If I use an action that matches an Exploit’s icon, do I perform the normal action or the Exploit ability?

If you use an action (from a building or an Action token) to activate an Exploit ability, you do not perform the normal action; instead you perform the ability printed on the Exploit tile (page 4).

An Exploit says “spend a Trade token” — can I use a disc or another token as a proxy?

No — to spend a Trade token you must actually have the physical Trade token on your player mat, then discard it and adjust the related track; other tokens or discs do not count (page 4).

An Exploit can give me discs from my supply — what if I run out of discs?

If you run out of discs in your supply you may not gain any additional discs from the Exploit (page 4).

I placed a Shield on an Exploit earlier — what happens if I later lose presence in one of its regions? Do I still get the Exploit benefits and scoring?

If you lose all presence in one of an Exploit’s regions you lose access to that Exploit and must remove your Shield; only players with a Shield on the Exploit are eligible to interact with it or participate in its endgame scoring (pages 3–4).

When do we score Exploits at the end of the game and where do they go on the scorepad?

Exploits are scored first during final scoring, before any other scoring, and you should record each Exploit in the top three rows of the score pad; only players with a Shield on the Exploit may be involved in its scoring (page 4).
