The Pirate Republic: Africa Gambit

Forge a Pirate Republic in the early 18th-century Golden Age of Piracy while pursuing fame, fortune, and self-governance across the Atlantic. Each player commands a pirate captain, sailing the map, recruiting crew, attacking rivals, plundering ships, sacking forts, and establishing pirate havens. Build a personalized deck by acquiring cards that shape each captain’s abilities and personality, including new pirates, Portuguese forces, and the riches of West Africa. Work together to complete global missions—or betray fellow pirates while competing to gain Swagger and become the most infamous captain.

Fantastic for solo play—highly thematic and dynamic. Excellent hand management. It also works very well in groups, but it does require the right group, as the events can introduce a fair amount of chaos and sometimes create a snowball effect. That’s easy to fix with a few tweaks if your group prefers more control over this. The best pirate-themed game I’ve played in terms of balancing complexity, depth, and fun.
