Players guide an empire from the Stone Age through the Late Iron Age, expanding population, founding cities and developing cultural, technological and civic advances. Gameplay alternates exploration and placement on a large map with intensive trading sessions where players exchange commodities and sometimes hidden calamities. Cities produce trade cards that fund purchases of 51 distinct advances across Arts, Crafts, Science, Civics and Religion, each granting in-game benefits and discounts toward future advances. Conflict, calamities and positioning on the map affect outcomes, and victory points come from population, cities, advances and special buildings. Scalable scenarios and numerous expansions adjust player count, map size and additional mechanics.
