L'escenari és una civilització interestel·lar del futur llunyà, fracturada en imperis rivals i dominis de senyors de la guerra, on les intrigues polítiques, la pirateria, els contractes de mercenaris i les vendettas personals alimenten un conflicte constant. Els jugadors assumeixen rols com ara pilots de robots gegants, espies, comerciants, científics o mercenaris, i creen personatges vinculats a faccions, cases o clans. La partida se centra en el joc de rol narratiu, les lleialtats faccionals, les missions i la investigació, i els combats dramàtics, resolts amb regles per a les accions personals i els enfrontaments entre mechs. Els personatges progressen a través de les seves decisions, reputació i recursos mentre persegueixen l'honor, el benefici o la supervivència en mons en disputa.
