Super Dungeon Explore

A dungeon-crawling skirmish that channels 8-bit JRPG aesthetics through chibi-style miniatures and modular board tiles. One to five players each control a hero with a character card listing movement, attack, armor, willpower, dexterity, action points and hearts; one player acts as the Dark Consul and fields the dungeon’s monsters. Play alternates between individual heroes and monster activations with turn order varying by round. Combat and checks use custom dice showing hearts, potions and stars; wounded heroes draw loot cards and open chests to improve equipment. Monsters rarely gain upgrades, while the Dark Consul deploys reinforcements from spawn points. Heroes win by defeating the spawned dungeon boss; the Dark Consul wins by eliminating all heroes.

    This is an overlord vs players minis combat game. The board is laid out with monster spawn points that spit a steady stream of bad guys. Players run around smashing the points, leveling up along the way by tucking cards into various sides of their player boards. Eventually the heroes get worn down, and then mini bosses or final bosses spawn and the really tough battle begins. The minis are cute, particularly the monsters. Lots of clever sculpts. The mechanisms are pretty basic. There's nothing that really makes this game stand out from similar games. Being the overlord is a little dull. The process could be automated and it would be a better experience. I would play this more, but nothing is pulling me to. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ☆ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★★☆☆ Raw enjoyment
