You choose one of the five focus cards, resolve its effect, then pick it up and place it into the first slot while all cards to its left shift right one slot — the chosen card does not remain in its old slot after resolving (see page 6).

No — you must place a control token on a space adjacent to a friendly city, but not on water or on any space whose terrain has a higher difficulty than the culture card's slot, and the space cannot already contain a barbarian, city-state, city, or control token (see pages 7–8).

A caravan moves one space at a time up to the distance shown on your economy card (cannot enter water or terrain above the card's slot); if it reaches a city-state or rival city you immediately return the caravan to your economy card, gain two trade tokens (placed as specified) and may take a diplomacy card (see pages 8–9 and clarification on page 16).

The attacker rolls one die and adds the military card's slot plus any attack bonuses, while the defender rolls one die and adds a type-based bonus (city-state = +8; barbarian = terrain difficulty; control token/city = terrain difficulty with city doubled plus reinforced-token bonuses); after rolls the attacker may spend trade tokens from his military card, then the defender may do likewise, and defender wins ties (see pages 11 and 18).

To build a wonder you choose a faceup wonder and pay production equal to your industry card's slot +2 production per eligible resource spent +1 per trade token spent from the industry card; place the wonder card by your leader sheet and put its matching wonder token under a friendly city that does not already have a wonder token (see pages 10 and 14/18).

Before the first player's turn (excluding the first), advance the event dial and resolve its icon — the barbarian-move icon makes every barbarian move one space in the rolled direction and the spawn icon returns defeated barbarians to their matching spawn locations; if a barbarian moves into a caravan it is destroyed, into an unreinforced token or non-capital city it is destroyed, into a reinforced token the token flips unreinforced and the barbarian returns, and into a capital city the owner discards two trade tokens (see pages 12 and 16).
