Homesteaders

2009 · City Building

Homesteaders

Players develop a frontier settlement into a functioning town by bidding for building opportunities and spending resource cubes to construct structures of different types. Each round features an auction phase to claim building types, then a building phase where players pay resources to erect buildings that provide abilities, income, or victory points; some effects require assigning a worker. The game runs ten rounds plus a final income and trading opportunity before scoring. Scoring comes from constructed buildings, building-granted bonuses, and profits from selling resources. Effective resource management across nine resource types and careful debt control determine the highest scorer.

This is a auction/worker placement game. The pieces are really nice and the game runs very smoothly. It feels like every aspect is well thought out. You bid on the rights to construct buildings of a specific type, then if you win, you get to add one of those available buildings to your board, paying all construction costs. Most of those buildings have worker action spots than you can then use to generate points and resources. It's simply a pleasure to play, but for the best experience it does need 4 players exactly. The experience of this game is really strong, and I absolutely love the theme, and I love working the tiles after the auction phase. The only big downside for me is that the game doesn't change much session to session. The only variability comes from which tiles you win the bid for. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :star: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :nostar: Multiple plays stay interesting :star: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::star::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment
