Keythedral

2002 · City Building

Keythedral

Players control five cottages, each housing a worker who moves into adjacent fields each turn to gather resources needed to construct a five-stage cathedral. Early stages require basic materials while later stages need specialized goods; builders also consume food and water and may occasionally receive wine. Fields become contested as more workers arrive; overcrowding can leave workers idle. Players may place fences to exclude opponents from fields, and wine can be spent to remove fences. The requirements for the next construction stage remain unknown until the current stage is completed, so players must balance resource gathering, worker placement, and fence management.

Cute mechanics, the way workers are assigned and the way you can block workers by building walls. The game has some problems though. Too much is determined in the initial setup, and too much of what happens after that is governed by a non-alterable turn order. The different resources are pretty same-ey, and not knowing which construction tiles are in the row of the "key"-thedral following the current row makes it hard to plan ahead. The deck of action cards feel uneven in quality.

    Fun game. simple and elegant.

I really, really like this game. The decisions to be made are quite difficult, and there are several different stratagies to pursue - with none really the best for winning. See my review for more details.
