Players act as Portuguese maritime entrepreneurs during the Age of Discovery, hiring workers, buying ships and buildings, and sending fleets to explore and establish colonies. Sail to distant lands to claim colonies that produce sugar, gold and spices, then sell goods on the market to raise money for more ships, factories, shipyards and churches. Acquire workers and use them to found colonies, construct buildings and obtain privileges across five categories that shape strategic paths. Score comes from the interaction of privileges with achievements — colonies, factories, discoveries, shipyards and churches — and the player with the best combination at game end wins.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Can I choose the same rondel action two turns in a row?

No — you must move the octagonal game stone forward each turn; to execute the same action twice in a row would require moving forward 8 fields and paying 5 ships, so staying on the same field isn’t allowed in practice (page 4).

How many ships do I need to enter an unexplored sea region and what happens to them?

You need at least 2 ships to enter a region with an explorer disk; one of those ships is lost (returned to your supply), you take the explorer to your sheet, reveal the colony stack and receive a cash bonus equal to the cheapest revealed colony; some regions (Nagasaki, and Macau in some player counts) cause double loss and thus require at least 3 ships (pages 5–6).

Do I spend ships or workers when founding colonies?

Founding colonies does not consume ships or workers, but each new colony requires one of your ships to be present in the region and two workers in Lisboa, and each ship or worker can be used only once per turn (page 6).

Can I both sell and process the same type of good in one Market action?

No — for each good type you must choose separately: you may sell or process that type but you cannot both sell and process the same good type in the same turn (page 7).

How do Privileges work — what do they cost and are there limits?

Taking a privilege costs 1 worker from Lisboa (so you must have more than 2 workers since you must always leave at least 2 in Lisboa), you may take at most one privilege token per turn, and no more than three privileges of any given type during the game; the token is placed in the highest available slot and you immediately receive the slot’s cash bonus multiplied by your number of that achievement (page 8).

When is the game ended and do I get a final turn if I triggered the end?

The game end is triggered either when Nagasaki is explored or when the last building is taken; after the trigger every player, including the player who triggered it, receives one final turn (if Nagasaki was explored via the Navegador card the triggering player still takes his regular rondel turn and then the final round follows) (page 9).
