Players embody 19th-century researchers following an occultist's notes to pursue the Philosopher’s Stone. Over three rounds representing years of study, they perform experiments, manipulate and transmute metals, and acquire and use mysterious artifacts. Actions include conducting experiments on a personal lab board, producing resources, publishing research, and advancing mastery of primal elements. Scoring combines published work, elemental knowledge, and progress toward the ultimate transmutation goal. The new edition streamlines and simplifies the original mechanics for more accessible play.
