Gentes: Deluxified Edition

Players lead an ancient people across six rounds, developing a civilization by building monuments, educating citizens, founding cities and managing income. Each round players take turns performing one action, placing action tokens on a personal time track and taking sand-timer markers or paying money; running out of free time-track spaces forces a pass. Actions include buying cards from a common display, playing monument cards to a personal tableau, training specific types of people, founding cities, and taking money. Monument and city effects generate additional actions or end-of-round benefits, while matching achievement symbols on cards yields escalating points. Resource and timing choices determine how many actions a player can take each round and shape long-term engine building.

This is a tight efficiency game, where your goal is to line up six markers across three tracks in such a way that you can grab and play cards which score big points. The 2 markers on each track can't pass each other, and moving things along the tracks can get expensive and action intensive. Managing money is crucial as is having turn order to get the action markers that give you the greatest time efficiency. At the top of your player board, you have spaces for action tokens, but for each action token you grab, you also have to take some number of timer tokens representing the time spent on the action. Each box on your board can hold one action token, or up to 2 timer tokens. This means selecting an action with three time printed on it eats somewhere between 3-4 action spaces as you can choose to double up or put single timer tokens in each box. The reason for doing that is during the reset phase, you remove one timer token from each box, so if you double up this turn, you lose the action space next turn. It's a really interesting action selection puzzle. Generally actions that take less time cost more money. Money is gotten through several engine building methods, but of course setting those up uses actions and time. Very smooth system. Excited to get better at it. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :star: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :nostar: Multiple plays stay interesting :star: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::star::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment
