The Rise of the Roman Republic

Volume #1 of the Ancient World Series by Richard H. Berg. This introductory wargame covers the Samnite Wars, the invasion of Pyrrhus, and the first three years of Hannibal’s campaign on a single map of Italy, including Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica. Players command armies across yearly turns, with movement limited by leader capability and attrition rather than fixed allowances. Roman forces must also contend with elections, consuls, and Senate permissions, while combat uses a results table with unusual outcomes, cavalry, hoplites, and elephants. Scenarios are designed for one or two players and can generally be completed in an evening.
