Stalingrad Roads: Battle on the Edge of the Abyss

The turning point of the war: the Soviet encirclement and defeat of Axis forces besieging Stalingrad in the winter of 1942–43. This two-player hex-and-counter wargame includes a learning scenario and four main scenarios, from Operation Uranus to von Manstein’s Backhand Blow counter-attack. Players manage supply, command, reserves, support counters, weather, Soviet momentum, German superiority, and Führer Approval. Nearby headquarters are vital for maintaining supply, while punishing combat and shifting conditions reflect the campaign’s severe attrition. The full campaign takes several hours, with shorter scenarios suited to an evening.
