Assault on Doomrock

A cooperative fantasy adventure game set in a chaotic and comedic world. Players create unusual heroes by combining randomized classes and traits, then explore a procedurally generated map filled with events, quests, shops, secrets, and peril. Across a three-act campaign, the party collects gear, abilities, and silver before facing increasingly difficult encounters. Grid-free battles use dice allocation, abstract positioning, card-driven enemy actions, and coordinated ability combinations. Poor choices and limited time can lead to defeat before the final battle.

This is a very mechanically clever game, but I believe the reason I wind up bored is that none of my choices are ever difficult. You start off in the adventure phase, where as a group, you have to choose how best to spend your time tokens. This is a sequence of non-decisions, as really all you need is to get X dollars to spend on Y characters leveling and then whatever gear happens to show up at shops. Then you do the battle phase where your only significant choice is who you stand next to. After that there is the cute puzzle of figuring out how everyone's abilities can best combo, but it's just not enough to be compelling, since the activation of those abilities is die roll reliant. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ☆ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ☆☆☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment
