Players draft books by winning tricks in a trick-taking game where there is no trump and players must follow suit when possible; the highest card of the lead suit wins unless the running total of card values on a trick exceeds a threshold (14–17 depending on player count), in which case the trick ends immediately and the last card played takes it. Hands may end at different times; when one player runs out of cards a round ends and the remaining players simultaneously choose which cards from their hands to add to their collection. Each collected card counts as –1 point, but a player who holds the majority in a suit scores +1 point per card in that suit instead. After a number of rounds equal to the player count, the highest total score wins.
