Carcassonne: The City

Lay tiles to expand a medieval town, connecting streets, houses, and marketplaces. Place followers on features to claim them, or assign guards to the wooden town wall to score differently from standard follower placement. Build the town wall outward from a central gate using carved wooden wall sections and optional cylindrical towers; walls and towers both affect scoring and create a finished three-dimensional town at game end.

Carcassonne was the second game I played after Settlers of Catan years ago, and unlike Catan it almost holds up to modern strategy board game standards. Almost. Over the years they tried to update it with new rules and new expansions, often creating more confusion than modernization. Carcassonne the City seems to be an effective answer to what a player like me is looking for. It's fundamentally Carcassonne, but it adds new elements of strategy without over-complicating the rules. Placing tiles is easier than before because the only feature that can not be interrupted are roads, and added to that is a new element where you build an actual wooden wall around the city slowly, and you may place a worker to stand on the wall and score points for the whole contiguous row. It is definitely a good looking version of Carcassonne but it loses some points because of its complexity while not bringing that much more to the table than regular C arcassonne.
