Finspan

Players take the role of marine researchers exploring the Sunlight, Twilight, and Midnight zones to find and catalog aquatic life. Over four rounds of dives, players collect fish, discover eggs, hatch young, and group juveniles into schools to generate scoring benefits. Each dive site emphasizes a different research action—expanding the collection, finding eggs, hatching offspring, or consolidating young into schools—and deeper dives yield different rewards. Scoring comes from collected fish, eggs, young, schools, and end-game achievements; the highest total points wins.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When I dive, do I skip zones where I don’t have a fish?

No. Move the diver through all three zones; you may gain a zone bonus only if you have a fish in that same column and zone. (p. 6)

Can I get the bottom bonus every time I dive in the same column?

No. You may gain that column’s bottom bonus only the first time a diver reaches its bottom each week; later divers go in the gray box and get no bottom bonus. (p. 6)

Can I put a fish in any empty slot on my ocean?

Only if the slot matches the fish’s allowed zone, and fish with a blue, purple, or green color band must go in the matching dive-site column. Fish without one of those bands may go in any column. (p. 4)

When I cover a fish, does it disappear, and what happens to its tokens?

The covering fish must be longer than the fish it consumes. Tokens on the consumed fish transfer to the new fish; the consumed fish stays underneath, no longer counts as a fish in your ocean, and is worth 1 point at game end. (pp. 5, 8)

When do three young become a school, and can I turn a school back into young?

Whenever 3 or more young share a slot, return 3 to the supply and replace them with a school token. A school is worth 6 points and cannot be broken up into young again. (p. 9)

Do the forage fish printed on my ocean count as fish?

Yes. Forage fish count as fish for dive-site bonuses and achievements, and they can be consumed by fish cards. A consumed forage fish counts as a consumed fish for achievements and end-game scoring. (p. 9)
