Gizmos

Players collect colorful energy marbles to construct machine cards that score victory points and provide ongoing abilities. On a turn, players choose from actions like drawing cards, reserving a card for later, taking marbles from a dispenser, or paying the colored marbles to build a machine into their tableau. Built machines grant points and create engine effects and triggers; many machines have chain-reaction attachments that generate extra resources or actions when conditions are met. The player who efficiently builds the most productive engine and accumulates the most victory points wins.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When I File or Build a Gizmo from the Display, when is the Display refilled?

Whenever you take a faceup Gizmo from the Display (by File or by Build from the Display), immediately draw a new card from that same level deck and place it into the empty slot — after drawing the new Gizmo, your File/Build action is over (page 3).

Can I use a Gizmo’s effect on the same turn I build that Gizmo?

Yes — you may use a Gizmo’s effect on the same turn it is built, but it cannot be triggered by the same action that built it, and each Gizmo may only be used once per turn (page 4).

May I Research from more than one Level deck or draw more cards than my Research amount?

No — choose a single facedown Level deck and draw a number of cards equal to your Research amount (you may not draw from more than one deck at a time); if fewer cards remain draw only what’s available (page 4).

If a Gizmo effect gives me an action (like Pick or Build), does that trigger other Gizmos and how do chain reactions work?

Yes — actions granted by Gizmo effects are actions and can trigger other Gizmos; whenever you perform any action (including ones triggered by Gizmos) check and activate triggered Gizmos in any order, with no limit to the length of a chain, though each Gizmo can be used only once per turn (page 4).

If an ability tells me to draw a random Energy, can I take it from the Energy Row?

No — a random Energy draw is not a Pick action: you draw blindly from the top of the Dispenser, whereas a Pick action specifically chooses one of the six energies in the Energy Row (page 3).

How do I pay for a Gizmo and can I use Converters to change energy when building?

To build you spend Energy from your Energy Storage Ring matching the Gizmo’s type and cost by placing those spheres back into the Dispenser; active Converter Gizmos may allow you to convert energy during a Build action (see Converters in the List of Effects) (page 3; converters mentioned page 4).
