Porta Nigra

2015 · City Building

Porta Nigra

Players act as Roman architects in late-antique Augusta Treverorum, competing to construct and develop the city gate and surrounding structures. Each player controls a master builder who moves around a circular board track; purchase and construction options are available only at the builder’s current location, and moving farther along the track costs resources. Turn actions come from a personal deck of cards that determines how many and which actions a player can take. Construction is represented with physical 3D building pieces placed at board locations, and players must plan movement, resource expenditure, and deck-driven actions to score points for completed works.

#AreaControl #SetCollection A themeless, boring game that has a lot of luck involved but wants to be strategic. Buen juego de mayorías donde tienes que hacer castillos y ser el más rápido en colocarlos y ganar esos puntos.

Another extremely satisfying area majority game by Kramer and Kiesling! This game is sort of a heavier permutation of the ideas in The Palaces of Carrara. You are buying colored bricks and building parts of four buildings, by paying money to move your worker to the regions where the bricks you want are available, and then again to where you want to build. Each build spot has both a height and a color requirement, and each build spot gives you instant points, a cool benefit for every third brick you place, AND a different way in which it's majority scores. To make things even more interesting, your action options are dictated by the cards you draw from your deck, AND you are trying to line your actions up to also grab bonus building cards that come to you when you build a specific color in a specific building. The economy of the bricks vs dollars is really tight and interesting puzzle. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment
