Players assume the roles of investors building railways across late-19th-century China, buying and selling shares in historical railway companies and directing their operations. Companies lay track, run trains to collect revenue, and upgrade rolling stock as the game progresses; share values rise and fall with company performance and influence player wealth. Turn order for companies is fixed at par and does not change with stock prices, and the game lets players influence the pace of stock rounds versus operating rounds, with new stock activity triggered by train purchases. The player with the highest combined cash and share value wins.
