Players represent powerful patrician families vying for political influence in ancient Rome, using followers to position themselves on the board each round. The game combines worker placement and set collection: players take actions to gather cards, complete objectives, and contest control of factions by playing sets of faction cards. Control of a faction is maintained until an opponent plays a larger or higher-valued set to replace it, and faction control grants ongoing benefits. Victory is achieved either by fulfilling the objectives on a chosen victory-condition card or by reaching a point threshold in the alternate scoring variant.
