1989: Dawn of Freedom

A two-player card-driven game recreating the political upheaval across Eastern Europe in 1989. One player commands the Communist authorities, managing repression, concessions, and economic crises to retain control over six Warsaw Pact nations. The opposing player leads dissidents, activists and the Church, using cards and actions to build civil society, sway workers and foment democratic revolutions. Play emphasizes political influence, event-driven shifts, and tactical choices about when to crack down or offer reforms. Victory depends on control of key countries and the timing of popular movements as the Soviet Union’s willingness to intervene wanes.
