San Juan (Second Edition)

Players develop a colonial town by playing cards as buildings or using them as currency to construct other buildings. Each round, players select one of several roles that trigger effects for all players and grant a bonus to the chooser, such as producing goods or cheaper construction. Production buildings generate face-down goods from the deck while violet buildings grant special powers or extra points. Victory points come only from buildings and the game ends when a player has built twelve buildings. The deck includes production and special buildings from the original release plus additional building cards, and enforces a seven-card hand limit each round.

If I choose a role, do I get the privilege and do other players still take the action?

The player who chooses the role takes the action and the privilege (if any) first; then, in clockwise order, each other player may take the action (but not the privilege) or skip it (exceptions: prospector has only a privilege). (p.3)

Can I build during someone else’s Builder turn, and does the Builder pay less?

Yes — when the Builder is chosen, every player in turn may build one building; the player who chose Builder pays one card less toward a building’s cost as the privilege. (p.3)

Do covered (face-down) buildings still work or produce goods?

No — a covered building immediately loses its function; if a production building is covered while it has a good on it, that good is lost and discarded. (p.10; production rules p.4)

When I sell a good as Trader, can I look at the goods card I discard to know what I’m selling?

No — when selling you take the goods card from a production building, place it face down on the discard pile without looking at it, and then draw the number of cards shown on the trading house tile. (p.5)

When must I discard down to the 7‑card hand limit — immediately or only at certain times?

Hand limits are enforced at the start of a new round by the new Governor (players may hold more than seven cards during a round); owners of a tower may keep up to 12 cards when the limit is checked. (p.6; tower note p.10)
