Onward to Venus

Players compete to expand an off-world empire across planets and moons, using turn-based movement to claim region tiles. Each turn players travel through the system, take tiles that grant cards, income, or actions to build factories and mines, hunt native beasts, or launch attacks against rivals. Tiles can also increase a location’s crisis level; accumulated crises trigger global events such as invasions, rebellions, or pirate raids that affect all players. The game mixes resource management, area control, and tactical card play over three rounds, with straightforward rules and an average playtime around 90 minutes.

This is a very curious area control game. The idea is, at the end of three rounds, have the highest money production on as many planets as you can, with some points for second and third places. In order for you to get these production buildings, you have to be first to reach and sometimes fight the randomly drawn token that allows you to place the piece. This leads to some strangeness, for example a planet might never get more than one token that allows building. Additionally, some of the randomly drawn tokens can cause a crisis, which is a negative event if it isn't dealt with via military strength. There is also a tile that lets you conquer an opponent's building. Overall the game is interesting because it can get quirky. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ☆ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ☆ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★☆☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment
