Star Trek: Catan

Players take on the roles of starfarers establishing outposts at intersections of planetary systems and collecting resources produced by dice rolls: dilithium, tritanium, food, oxygen and water. Resources are traded and spent to build Starships that link regions, found additional Outposts and upgrade them to Starbases, and purchase Development Cards that grant victory points or special effects. A roll of 7 brings a Klingon ship that blocks production and forces high-resource players to discard. Each player receives a Support Card tied to a well-known crew member that grants a special ability; cards can be used for strategic benefits, and used cards may be exchanged for new Support Cards according to the setup and play rules.

I've played a lot of Settlers of Catan. To play this we use the Star Trek: Catan – Federation Space Map expansion. The map was wonderfully balanced, and the role cards that Star Trek Catan comes with helped a ton to mitigate the luck problems I used to have with Settlers. All in all, this is my favorite iteration of Catan so far. I wish the planets that produced the same color resources were colored a little more similarly, and it would be cute for the plastic ships that replaced roads to look differently from each other, since the score tracks are for Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans and Federation, but those are minor complaints. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment
