Shogi
A traditional Japanese board game played on a 9x9 grid where the objective is to capture the opponent’s king. Most pieces can promote when they enter the opponent’s last three ranks, changing their movement abilities. Captured enemy pieces join the captor’s reserves and may be dropped back onto the board on a later turn instead of making a normal move. The drop rule and widespread promotion keep the board populated and create many tactical and mating possibilities, producing dynamic middlegames and often rapid, decisive endgames with few draws.

Chipsmith6.2 Totally absorbing, wish I had more time to really play and learn in depth. Much different vibe than western chess.
The set I own is junky and handmade. I like it as well or better then chess. As soon as I learn all the symbols I'll get a real set. (someone should make a learners set with markings for each pieces move.)
