In occupied Hong Kong, the heroes receive a letter announcing the death of former Oxford professor Cyrus Lockheart and an unusual inheritance of potentially valuable papers and personal effects. They must retrieve the items in person while navigating criminals, eccentrics, rebels, refugees, and Japanese forces, setting off a race through the city for a mysterious jade scroll.
