Shield Wall: Hastings 1066

This low-complexity wargame recreates the Battle of Hastings using traditional hex-and-counter mechanics. Norman archers provide limited support, while foot and cavalry units combine to attack the strong Saxon shield wall on the hill. Saxon leaders must maintain the formation, as successful attacks can trigger involuntary pursuit and cost the defenders their high-ground advantage. Rules cover army demoralization, rallying, and Saxon reinforcements, with optional fatigue rules that increase the challenge for both sides. Victory comes from holding or capturing the hill, eliminating the opposing king, or destroying the enemy army. The game includes approximately 147 counters and a 22-by-17-inch gameboard.
