1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties

Set in East Anglia during the 19th-century railway boom, players develop railway companies on a compact, company-dense map where most available corporations appear and only 37 hexes exist. Players petition parliament to float preferred companies, raise capital through a mix of full and partial capitalization, and acquire trains from three types that impose different route and building objectives. Company shares trade on a semi-linear stock market with multiple jump levels, and corporations can merge or be re-floated as the network and ownership evolve.

Most of the added mechanisms seem redundant to me. Some of the decisions feel like false choices, where it is obvious what the optimisation is … in the end it's a fun track laying euro based on 18xx mechanisms with A LOT added complexity. The problem is this added complexity doesn't always add much to my enjoyment. So what's left is a extremely operational euro 18xx spin-off, which is probably a fun game for whoever loves track laying and blocking other tracks. Shame because after reading the rules I was pretty intrigued, but in the end it boils down to concession merging and track laying. Even the share conversion mechanism - which at first sight appear very complex - can be reduced to pretty simple choices …also the refinancing: it seems a very cool idea, but I'm not sure it has its space in such an operational game
