Players take the role of one of seven early Greek city-states and guide its development across the Aegean Basin during the rise of classical Greece. Gameplay mixes city-building, technological and cultural development, resource management, and military action as players pursue a combination of public and secret objectives to shape their legacy. Actions include expanding influence, advancing civic and religious institutions, engaging in warfare or diplomacy, and competing for victory points through varied strategies. Rounds progress with engine-building mechanics and strategic choices that reward long-term planning and tactical adaptation to rivals.
