Fraksjoner bark sammen under et arrpreget, underjordisk landskap, der leiemordere, udøde kongelige, luftbårne speidere, erfarne lovmenn og disiplinerte samuraier kjemper om kontrollen over Blackscar. Spillerne stiller med seks nye helter med unike evner, plasserer modulbasert heksagonterreng og ødeleggbare soppelementer, og bruker hærkort, terninger, markører og scenarioregler til å avgjøre kamper og mål. Nye mekanikker introduserer skyggebrikker og levende Shroudshrooms som endrer bevegelse og siktlinjer, mens reaktive evner og evner basert på avbrytelser skaper taktiske valg knyttet til timing. Kampene legger vekt på filmatiske avgjørelser fra øyeblikk til øyeblikk – forsteining, dueller med lynrask trekking, snikangrep og luftbåren speiding – samtidig som de støtter synergier på tvers av fraksjoner og styrker som kan utvides.
