Vast: The Crystal Caverns

A highly asymmetric dungeon crawl in which each player controls a distinct faction with unique goals and mechanics. One player mans the solitary Knight exploring the caverns, another commands a horde of Goblins, a third may embody the sluggish, treasure-guarding Dragon, and a fourth takes the role of the Cave itself, manipulating tunnels and hazards. Players move miniatures, manage resources and abilities specific to their role, and pursue different victory conditions that can conflict or intersect. Encounters with monsters, environmental effects from malevolent crystals, and tactical combat shape play, producing different dynamics and strategies depending on the combination of roles at the table.

This game is so asymmetric that each player is basically playing a completely different game, where ultimately their goal is to keep the next player in the chain of mechanisms in-check. It's fragile, where if one player does their job poorly, then the player they were designed to stop runs away with it. The theme is silly, and I really enjoy the idea of the game, although in practice, explaining different mechanisms to each player before playing is too much downtime during setup, and ultimately the experience of play isn't rewarding enough to justify the work. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ☆ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ☆☆☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment

Pytania o zasady

Odpowiedzi z instrukcji od asystenta zasad Ludoya.

When I reveal a Dark tile, do I resolve its effect before filling the open edges around it?

No. First orient the revealed tile, then fill all new open edges with Dark tiles; only after that do you resolve the tile’s effect. This applies before the Collapse begins (Rulebook, p. 4; FAQ, p. 3).

Can the Knight keep moving after spending her last Encounter?

No. The Knight may move and spend Encounters in any order, but she can move only while she has at least one Encounter remaining. Equipment and other abilities that do not require an Encounter or movement may still be used afterward (Rulebook, p. 6; FAQ, p. 7).

Can I attack the Dragon while he is underground without a Bomb?

Not before the Collapse: the Knight needs to use a Bomb and may attack only once that turn. During the Collapse, a Bomb is no longer required, and once the Dragon is on the surface he can be attacked multiple times, once per Encounter (Rulebook, p. 7; FAQ, p. 8).

What happens if a Goblin Tribe would grow beyond 4 Population?

A Tribe can never have more than 4 Population discs. Add enough discs to reach 4, then resolve overpopulation by scattering one Tribe; the scattered Tribe does not have to be the one that exceeded the limit (Rulebook, p. 8; FAQ, p. 11).

Can the Thief move through walls or keep moving after running out of Action cubes?

The Thief cannot cross walls normally; he must use the Climb action, which costs Action cubes but does not provide movement by itself. Movement and actions may be mixed freely, and he may continue using either one even after the other is depleted (Rulebook, p. 14; FAQ, pp. 17–18).

When does the Collapse begin, and do I keep filling open edges afterward?

The Collapse begins at the beginning of the next player’s turn after all Cave tiles have been placed. From then on, open edges are not filled, and the Cave removes three tiles during its Shape the Cave phase; the game ends when five Crystal tiles have been removed (Rulebook, pp. 4, 12; FAQ, p. 3).
