Hadrian's Wall

Hadrian's Wall

Players act as Roman generals assigned to build and manage a milecastle and its stretch of wall on the northern frontier of Britannia. Over six rounds they recruit and deploy workers, construct fortifications and civilian buildings, station troops to man the defenses, and provide services and entertainment to attract inhabitants. Actions generate resources and advance four prestige tracks—renown, piety, valor, and discipline—while missteps incur disdain. Each decision balances military readiness, civic development, and political favor as players vie to score the most prestige by the end of the campaign.

Amazing advanced game of pen & paper! (Not much roll and write in here) 63 points tie on first game, untied by card points.

  • Jan Solo8,5

When I take an action, do I pay the costs first or get the benefits first, and when do I fill boxes/tracks?

You pay all listed costs when you take the action, then resolve the action’s effects and fill any boxes or tracks the action instructs you to fill — see the general action rules and examples (page 6).

When and how do I draw, choose, place Path and Prospect cards, and when do Prospects give workers/resources?

During the Year Setup you draw the Path and Prospect cards and choose/place them as instructed; placing a Prospect grants the listed workers/resources immediately when it is placed (page 5).

If my gladiator takes damage in a battle can it die permanently, and do I still get Piety or Renown from the fight?

Gladiator battles are resolved by recording the fight and drawing Fate cards to apply damage; gladiators can be killed (removed), and you still apply any Piety and Renown gains from the battle resolution as specified (page 15).

When I use the Market to buy Trade Goods, do I record them and score Renown immediately?

Yes — when you buy Trade Goods at the Market you record them on your player sheet and gain any Renown granted by that purchase as part of the Market action (see the Market rules and example, page 13).

What happens at the end of the year — when are Pict attacks resolved and how is Disdain handled/scored?

At year end you draw Fate cards to resolve Pict attacks, check cohorts, and then resolve Valour/Disdain effects; Disdain is tracked during the game and any related VP penalties or Favours are applied as described at end-of-year and end-of-game (pages 20–21).
