HEXplore It: The Valley of the Dead King

Players team up as customizable heroes in a fantasy realm, combining a Role (profession) and Race (heritage) to define strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities. Heroes track stats with dry-erase markers and develop through quests, battles, and exploration across a hex-map. Travel between cities, shrines, and ruins to gain power-ups, complete objectives, and fight varied opponents while avoiding hazards. A looming antagonist advances on the map, destroying cities and growing stronger as the game progresses. The goal is to power up heroes rapidly enough to confront and defeat that final threat.

    This game brings RPG combat to the table like no other. It's a bit dense and long but has beautiful mechanics that can remind to Runebound or other Adventure games. Interesting!

    Element of exploration/discovery, huge number of race/class combos, high replayability, good artwork, adjustable difficulty. It's what I've been looking for for years - the kind of game I would have loved as a kid but has some more depth for now-me.
