Requiem

A two-player wargame of the Spanish Civil War, in which players control the Nationalist and Republican sides. Players use cards to move troops, attack enemy-held towns, and request reinforcements across a map of Spain. The game is divided into column warfare and position warfare, each lasting five rounds. Every round includes strategy, battle, and logistics phases, during which players maneuver units and attempt to subdue the opposing side.

A very minimal card-driven wargame. PROS - The ranking up mechanic for generals is fun, introducing a bit of a push-your-luck game that rewards you for reading situations correctly. - It is pretty easy to teach and learn, making for a great wargame intro point for people who have never played them. CONS - The game is pretty luck dependant, and a bad start in which the Republican side loses Madrid during the 1st - 2nd round leaves them in a very uncomfortable position. - The Armada "advanced" variant has VERY little impact in the game, feeling almost totally disconnected from its flow. - There is an egregious mistake in production, making the miniatures for soldiers and irregulars of the Republican side WAY too similar. This does actively harm the game flow. - It feels like the cards could have hosted a bit of historical information, getting it closer to the feeling of a fully-fledged card-driven system.
