The Oregon Trail Card Game

The Oregon Trail Card Game

A cooperative card game that adapts the classic computer journey into a tabletop experience. Players travel a mapped trail from Independence to the Willamette Valley, using movement and Supply cards to ford rivers and respond to calamities such as rattlesnakes, starvation, broken wagons and dysentery. Party members can become injured or die; the group may choose to expend supplies to save someone or conserve resources and accept losses. Each death is recorded on a roster card with a tombstone and epitaph. The objective is to get at least one member of the party to Oregon while managing supplies and shared risk.

My rating is based off the BGG ratings. I could be talked into this game with a group setting but the game itself feels like it's missing an element or two. It feels a lot like a simple two sided game of chance. You live or die every 2 or 3 turns. I get that the theme is supposed to be how harsh and tough the actual trail was but this game made it too black and white. The game boils down to, You are going to die unless you have resource X and Y. Don't have them? You lose. There are no real ways of collecting extra resources so it's 100% chance. It might be better in a bigger setting, don't bother playing unless you have 3 or more.
