Players assume the role of 1 of 4 campaign managers in 1860, representing the Constitutional Unionists, Northern Democrats, Republicans, or Southern Democrats. Through card-driven play, they use campaign tactics, platform speeches, political maneuvering, and historical events to compete for electoral votes and win the presidency. President Buchanan interferes, radicals riot, and tensions rise as the country moves toward civil war. A party wins with 152 or more electoral votes, or through a congressional decision after an electoral tie. If South Carolina secedes first, the game ends and everyone loses.
