Risk Legacy

Risk Legacy is a board game for 3–5 players. It plays in 60 minutes and is meant for ages 13 and up. Ludoya players call it best with 5. It is rated 5,1 out of 10 by 9 Ludoya reviewers. The cheapest copy in stock is 48,29 € (Suomi).

Players vie for global dominance by controlling territories, recruiting and moving armies, and resolving combat with dice rolls to eliminate opponents or claim a set number of victory points. The game unfolds as a campaign: outcomes and player choices permanently alter cards, components, faction abilities and the rulebook itself, while sealed envelopes and boxes introduce new content and mechanics at prescribed times. Each faction has unique pieces and asymmetrical powers that develop over successive sessions; winners and surviving players apply lasting changes to the board state and future setup. Initial sessions run about 30–90 minutes including setup and a brief rules overview.

I dislike the heavy luck driven combat of Risk. The legacy stuff is cool in theory, but it doesn't overcome the problems I have with so much of the game being entirely dependant on die luck and averages. Honestly, this is a case of being put in front of a game that really wasn't meant for me. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ☆ Low or mitigatable luck elements ☆☆☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment

Takes a lot of what makes Risk painful and works around it using the Legacy format. Introduced me to Legacy games as a whole and I find them enjoyable. Make sure you have a solid and consistent group for this, otherwise you may never finish.

How many Red Stars do I need to win the game?

You win immediately when you are the first player to have 4 Red Stars. (Rulebook, page 8.)

Can I buy a Red Star at any time by turning in Resource cards?

You may buy Red Star tokens only at the very start of your turn by turning in four Resource cards per Red Star, and you may buy more than one if you have the cards. (Rulebook, page 8.)

Do I get a Resource card when I expand into an unoccupied territory or a city?

No — you only draw a Resource card if you attacked and conquered at least one territory from an opponent; expanding into unoccupied territories (even with a city) does not qualify. (Rulebook, pages 10 and 12.)

How many troops do I recruit on my turn and do cities count?

Recruitment = (your territories + your population from cities) ÷ 3 (round down, minimum 3), plus any continent bonuses and troops from turning in Resource cards; city population is added to your territory count. (Rulebook, page 9.)

How many troops/dice can I use in an attack or defense, and who wins ties?

The attacker may commit up to 3 attacking troops (roll up to 3 dice) and the defender up to 2 troops (roll 1 or 2 dice); compare highest dice down, and the defender wins ties. (Rulebook, page 10.)

If I capture a territory that has an enemy HQ, do I take a Red Star token or just control the HQ?

You control the HQ piece that remains on the board and thereby gain that Red Star (you do not take a Red Star token from the supply; Red Star tokens never change hands). If controlling that HQ gives you your fourth Red Star you win. (Rulebook, pages 8 and 12.)
